While we dreamed of a use for tech to connect people, driven by a humanity-first ideology, it seemed more and more that the software industry was spearheaded by a founder-first mentality, where the goal was to create a control structure for billionaires, no matter the cost to humanity.
Hi, my name is Natalie Maas. I am one of the founders of Desqk, and today I felt the need to release a statement clarifying what we at Desqk stand for, and what we hope our role in the future to be:
In late 2019, my boyfriend and I were travelling the west coast in a van. I was able to do this because I was lucky enough to have employers who supported my wishes to work remotely, pre-Covid, in a corporate landscape that still hadn’t considered that being much of an option.
What I found, as I juggled different project management software to try and stay organized and connected, was that there wasn’t really anything that fit my direct needs as a remote, free-lance worker. Tools were usually team-centric and cluttered with features I didn’t need. I wanted to create something better.
Throughout this journey to develop Desqk, it has morphed and shifted to mean something more, in our eyes. A lot of that was driven by external factors that were shifting the tech landscape. While we dreamed of a use for tech to connect people, driven by a humanity-first ideology, it seemed more and more that the software industry was spearheaded by a founder-first mentality, where the goal was to create a control structure for billionaires, no matter the cost to humanity.
This has been disappointing, to say the least, but we also feel it has created an opportunity for Desqk to fill an even bigger role beyond project management; that is, a community. A gathering place for freelancers, creatives, side hustlers, and anyone else who wants to take part in this experiment. A novel idea. Software as a support system for humanity.
In 2026, we have the ability to make the world a place that works for everyone. We have the human capital and the technology, but we are being sold a future that’s not in our best interest, against our will. A world order that has been growth at all costs is being judged by a growing population that has been left behind. Our mission at Desqk is not to compete with sleep. It’s not to train AI models. It isn’t growth. We commit to being AI-free, and shaping any growth we have in to assisting a sustainable future for humans and our planet.
Our vision for the future of Desqk: a simple platform that helps you connect, organize, and manage your work, so you get can back to being human.
Please, join us.
